Opposition often makes claims, particularly to local elected officials, that tourism will suffer as a result of a smokefree ordinance. This 1999 study measured the before-enactment and after-enactment effect of smokefree ordinances on hotel revenues and tourism rates in three states and six cities.
Not surprisingly, the study found that hotel revenues were not affected by smokefree policies. Additionally, international tourism was either not affected or increased following implementation of smokefree ordinances.
