National Cancer Institute (NCI)

In 1999, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) issued its Smoking and Tobacco Control Monograph #10. The report is based on the California Environmental Protection Agency's (Cal-EPA) report on the Health Effects of Exposure to Environmental Tobacco Smoke. NCI decided to adapt the Cal-EPA report into its Monograph #10 in order to make the report and its important conclusions about the health effects of secondhand smoke more widely available.

Monograph #10 confirms earlier research finding that exposure to secondhand smoke is a significant cause of disease and death, including heart disease, lung cancer and other respiratory illnesses, middle ear infections, asthma, and SIDS.
