Fundraising Challenge: Ordinance Preservation Project
Did you know the ANR Foundation maintains a one-of-a-kind database of tobacco control laws in the United States? This unique resource contains the most comprehensive collection of tobacco control laws in the United States - encompassing more than 10,000 laws and 65,000 pages.
Since this collection of original documents is literally irreplaceable, we must find a way to protect it from flood, fire, or other damage. An initial pilot project grant from the Tobacco Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP) helped launch the "Tobacco Control Laws Preservation Project," which allowed us to start digitally preserving the documents.
Pete Hanauer, past Board President, Board member for 25 years, and now Senior Policy Analyst on our staff, along with his wife Harriet, has made a generous offer. They presented us with a challenge to raise a total of $25,000 to allow us to complete the preservation project. They will contribute $10,000 toward the effort if we can raise another $15,000 by September 30th. Thanks to the generosity of our Board and others, we have already raised more than $4000.
Our lean, mean Ordinance Database Team (photo at top) locates, collects, and analyzes all local and state tobacco control laws and then enters the relevant provisions of those laws into the database. These laws pertain to smokefree air, sales and distribution, youth access, advertising, excise taxes, and conditional use permits. Among other things, the database makes it possible for us to create user-friendly lists and maps of tobacco control laws data and to provide that data to researchers, media, and advocates nationwide. The lists and maps pages on our website receive more than 21,500 hits per month and make ANR the go-to source for tobacco control laws data.
This is our golden opportunity. We hope that we can count on your tax-deductible contribution to help meet Pete and Harriet's challenge and make certain that these documents are preserved for good. To be part of the challenge, please donate securely online!
