ASHRAE's Standard 62.1

ASHRAE's Standard 62.1 is the standard for acceptable indoor air quality for commercial and industrial spaces. Standard 62.1 is adopted into most state and municipal building codes. Currently, the stated purpose of Standard 62.1 is to "specify minimum ventilation rates and indoor air quality that will be acceptable to human occupants and are intended to minimize the potential for adverse health effects."

Standard 62.1 is under continuous maintenance, meaning that changes can be proposed at a moment's notice. With the new position statement, ASHRAE has demonstrated that health will remain an organizational priority as they consider future changes to this standard. To date, Standard 62.1 applies to non-smoking areas only. Smoke-filled establishment are not in compliance with Standard 62.1.
